چکیده

Discrete foci of white matter necrosis were observed in the telencephalic white matter in 6 cases of spontaneous ovine abortion. All fetuses were in the third trimester of gestation and 2 of the 6 were term fetuses. The lesions were distributed randomly throughout the cerebrocortical white matter and consist of pale hypocellular plaques with a variable glial cell response and encrustation of necrotic cellular processes. A variety of additional lesions were present in the brains of the aborted fetuses. The lesions of telencephalic white matter necrosis have not been reported previously and are unlike those associated with known viral infections of the developing fetus. Based on the character of the lesions, a hypoxic-ischemic or hypotensive mechanism is suggested. The lesions are compared with a similar condition in human fetuses and neonates.

Developmental lag in superoxide dismutases relative to other antioxidant enzymes in premyelinated human telencephalic white matter.

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) involves free radical injury to developing oligodendrocytes (OLs), resulting from ischemia/reperfusion, particularly between 24 and 32 gestational weeks. Using immunocytochemistry and Western blots, we tested the hypothesis that this vulnerability to free radical toxicity results, in part, from developmental lack of superoxide dismutases (SOD)-1 and -2, catala...

Daily ethanol exposure during late ovine pregnancy: physiological effects in the mother and fetus in the apparent absence of overt fetal cerebral dysmorphology.

High levels of ethanol (EtOH) consumption during pregnancy adversely affect fetal development; however, the effects of lower levels of exposure are less clear. Our objectives were to assess the effects of daily EtOH exposure (3.8 USA standard drinks) on fetal-maternal physiological variables and the fetal brain, particularly white matter. Pregnant ewes received daily intravenous infusions of Et...

Role of Recurrent Hypoxia-Ischemia in Preterm White Matter Injury Severity

OBJECTIVE Although the spectrum of white matter injury (WMI) in preterm infants is shifting from cystic necrotic lesions to milder forms, the factors that contribute to this changing spectrum are unclear. We hypothesized that recurrent hypoxia-ischemia (rHI) will exacerbate the spectrum of WMI defined by markers of inflammation and molecules related to the extracellular matrix (hyaluronan (HA) ...

Perinatal telencephalic leucoencephalopathy.

The frequent, though generally unrecognized, occurrence of damage to telencephalic white matter during the perinatal period prompted the present characterization of the pathological changes as well as a consideration of associated clinical and necropsy findings. Symmetrical astrocytosis or acutely damaged glial cells found predominantly in regions undergoing myelination suggest that the latter ...

Acute on chronic exposure to endotoxin in preterm fetal sheep.

Acute, high-dose exposure to endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in preterm fetal sheep can trigger periventricular white matter lesions (PVL), in association with severe hypotension/hypoxemia and significant mortality. Intriguingly, however, chronic or repeated exposure to LPS can induce tachyphylaxis. We therefore tested the hypothesis that progressive, acute on chronic fetal infection would b...
